World Series of Poker Overview
Published by Matt Greene on March 21, 2009
The World Series of Poker (informally known as the WSOP) is held annually and is the biggest event in poker, last year it made 8 lucky players millionaires. A series of satellite games and tournaments are held on poker sites around the world before the big event in Las Vegas.
It consists of 57 events played over a couple of days in June and July. The winner of each event wins a WSOP bracelet and a prize (which fluctuates depending on entrants, buy ins etc).
The grand finale is the ‘Main Event’ (this year the 3rd-15th July) with a $10k buy in which draws thousands of entrants with the winner receiving a multi-million prise pot. In 2008 the decision was taken to delay the main event till November to build the hype and anticipation, it has been decided to repeat this delay in the 2009 tournament.
The events are based around a few different games, all poker variants. Currently these include Texas Hold’em, Omaha Hold’em and Seven Card Stud. Other events include H.O.R.S.E, S.H.O.E, Chinese Poker and 5 card stud. In fact, following its return in 2006 the $50k buy in H.O.R.S.E event has become incredibly popular and, has become informally known by professionals, as the real decider of the World’s best poker player instead of the main event.
