Holland vs Scotland Match Preview

Riding high in World Cup qualifying Group Nine, Holland have to face Scotland at the Amsterdam Arena and, personally, I’m not expecting any surprises.

Scotland have no less than 10 players out injured, including key men such as Alan Hutton, striker James McFadden and David Weir.

The Netherlands, by contrast, have no such worries, with forwards Dirk Kuyt, Klaas Jan Huntelaar and Robin Van Persie all fit.

With so many Scotland players sidelined, it looks likely that Scotland manager George Burley will play a 4-5-1 formation with Kenny Miller starting upfront on his own.

Hearts defender Christophe Berra will partner Gary Caldwell in the centre of defence in the absence of David Weir and Stephen McManus, while Rangers ‘keeper Allan McGregor gets the nod ahead of Sunderland’s Craig Gordon.

For Dutch manager Bert van Marwijk, there are no such injury worries.

Even fragile winger Arjen Robben appears fit and will start for Holland while Ajax’s Maarten Stekelenburg is the preferred number 1.

I can’t see anything other than a convincing Netherlands win here, by at least two goals.

Huntelaar and Robben have been on fire for Real Madrid this term and they have too much pace and guile for what is a very inexperienced Scotland back line.

Burley’s decision to play one upfront looks like damage limitation rather than a cunning plan, so Holland to win this one.
