US MASTERS LEADERS AND FOLLOWERS

Right now, Chad Campbell (18/1 at William Hill ) is the tournament leader at -7, with the brilliantly named Hunter Mahan ( 18/1 at William Hill )and Jim Furyk (12/1 at Bet365 ) one back at six under.

Tiger Woods (9/5 at Bet365) is five back on -2, with Padraig Harrington (12/1 at Ladbrokes ) one shot ahead and Phil Mickelson (33/1 at William Hill) on a not entirely impressive 1 over.

Harrington feels that the greens were “generous” on the opening day and that “it’s going to be a little tougher as we go on”.

So, it’s probably unwise to put all your hard earned cash on Campbell to win it outright, but Harrington himself is looking good value for the top placed European at 5/2 with William Hill.

Tiger Woods has only recently returned from reconstructive surgery on his knee, but has won three events since his return. Tiger is looking in ominous form going into the first day of the US Masters.

Last year’s winner, Padraig Harrington, has not been in good form going into the Masters – he hasn’t placed in the top 10 of his last six events and, frankly, he doesn’t sound confident about his own chances.

Backing Harrington would be a mistake for the 2009 US Masters Tournament.

Smart money might be on Phil Mickelson, though. As the man in form, with two wins in his last four events, he has the game to win the tournament and should not be underestimated.

Watney and Mickelson are both four shots ahead of their nearest rivals Jeev Singh and Camilo Villegas and each of the leaders has been showing solid form over the previous three days.

While Mickelson is an old hand at this kind of thing, Watney is a comparative novice and I suspect he will not have the mental toughness to carry him through the final day.

Four shots is a lot to make up and I don’t see the chasing pack doing it, so Phil Mickelson is my favourite to win the WGC CA Championship 2009.
