GET IN THE GAME (USA) by Nigel Ridway of BET365.com - This Week's Betting Picks

AUGUST 5th, 2004 EDITION

PGA Tour Golf, The International

This week's event is decided by a stableford scoring system, rather than the usual strokeplay format, which means that attacking play is rewarded, and therefore favours certain types of player. Ernie Els is our favourite this week and it is not difficult to see why when you consider he has finished no worse than sixth in the last five years! The question is whether he will want the extra pressure that a win will put on him going into next week's USPGA Championship, the final Major of the year, especially considering he has finished runner-up in two of the three Majors played so far. He has twice let-down short price backers the week before both of the last two Majors.

At the odds, better value can found in the shape of Charles Howell, who boasts three top-20's here in the last three years, and is obviously suited by the format here. A prolific scorer of birdies and eagles in strokeplay events, but often with plenty of bogeys too, his aggressive play can be rewarded this week (two points for a birdie, five for an eagle), whilst he will not be over punished for his bad holes - only minus one point for a bogey.

Another player with an obvious liking for this event is Australian Geoff Ogilvy, after finishing eighth and 14th in his last two starts here. He has yet to win on Tour but is shaping up into one of the most consistent players around. Rookie Vaughan Taylor is tops in the field for eagles and 14th in birdie average on Tour, so he can be expected to score some points this week. With two top-10's in his last seven starts he could be ready to breakthrough this week.

Nigel's Three Off The Tee... Howell @ 28/1, Ogilvy @ 40/1, Taylor @ 125/1.

We will be betting this tournament In-Running throughout.

MLB - CHI Cubs @ SF Giants
Fr Aug 6 - 10:15 pm EST/Aug 7 - 02:15 GMT

The Rockies are always a hard team to beat at Coors Field but that didn't stop the Cubs scoring 10 in three innings in an 11-8 win on Wednesday night, to take sole possession of first in the National League Wild Card standings. After pinch-hitter Mark Sweeney hit a go-ahead two-run homer for Colorado, Aramis Ramirez homered to make it 7-6. Todd Walker added a two-run homer two batters later for the Cubs, who used 15 hits to win their third straight game and fifth of six.

On the same night the Giants lost to the Cincinnati Reds 8-7 at SBC Park, to fall two back of Chicago and one game behind the Padres in the NL Wild Card race. The loss sent the third-place Giants tumbling to 6 ½ games back of the Los Angeles Dodgers in the National League West.

The two teams meet at SBC Park on Friday for the start of a 3-game weekend series. Join us here at bet365 for live betting on the middle and final games of this series, where our markets will include: Game Total; Money Line; Run Line; A Score in the Innings; and Most Hits In The Innings.

CFL - OTT Renegades (4-3) @ BC Lions (3-3)
Live betting - Fr Aug 6 - 10:00 pm EST (TSN)/Aug 7 - 02:00 GMT (NASN)

An intriguing clash between Eastern flag carriers Ottawa and one of the fastest growing powers in the West. The Renegades were somewhat fortunate winners of their last game against the Stampeders, after Calgary quarterback Tommy Jones fumbled to lose control of the ball on a series that should have ended the game.

It was a game filled with gaffes from both sides including 31 penalties on both teams. The Renegades were sacked eight times, had to replace a quarterback who has all of two professional starts with a man who has none and lost three fumbles, yet they still won!

The Lions managed to neutralise the Montreal defence last Thursday, with quarterback Casey Printers showing his class in a 32-9 victory. With his stellar set of receivers, they should have no problem against the Renegades, who rarely win at the Lion's den. Lions by 18.

bet365 Game Lines:
Point Spread: OTT Renegades (+9.0) @ 10/11/BC Lions (-9.0) @ 10/11.
Totals: 58.5 @ 10/11.

Live betting will be available on this game, where our markets will include Point Spread and Game Total.

NASCAR Nextel Cup Series - Brickyard 400
Su Aug 9 - 2:30 pm EST (NBC)/18:00 GMT (NASN)

Bettors should have the edge this week by looking at the drivers who have been competitive at not only last week's race at Pocono but also at the race held there on June 13th. Because Pocono is so similar to Indy due to its long straights and tight turns most drivers will in fact be using the same car this week, so the correlation between the two is pretty strong, only last years Indy winner, Kevin Harvick, had never won at Pocono.

Of the top drivers, Jeff Gordon boasts the best record with half of his Pocono starts in the top-5, winning three, while at Indy he's top-5 in 10 starts with 3 wins. Other drivers with solid records include Dale Jarrett, with 3 wins at Pocono and two at Indy, and Bill Elliott, who won back to back in Pocono and then at Indy in consecutive weeks two seasons ago.

However, it is hard to ignore the claims of last week's winner Jimmie Johnson. After taking the June 13th race, he proceeded to make the others look silly last week with another awesome display of brilliance. No one has ever done the Pocono-Indy 3 step, winning all three in a year, but no one has looked as good as Johnson in some time.

Nigel's Checkered Flag... Jimmie Johnson @ 13/2.

bet365 Brickyard 400 prices... Jeff Gordon, Jimmie Johnson 13/2, Tony Stewart 8/1, Kaset Kahne 9/1, Bill Elliott 20/1, Dale Jarrett 25/1, others on bet365 website. Each Way 1/5 1.2.3.

Mike Tyson v Danny Williams
Fr Jul 30

Mike Tyson returns to the ring for only the second time in twenty-five months when he takes on British heavyweight Danny Williams (31-3) on Friday night. The former undisputed champion has not held a version of the world title since losing the WBA version to Evander Holyfield in November in 1996, and will see this fight as just another stepping stone to a possible title fight with Wladimir Klitschko.

On his latest comeback in February Tyson knocked-out Clifford Memphis in 49-seconds, and will be looking for another quick win, not only to convince the boxing world that he is a serious contender again, but also to avoid any stamina doubts coming into play.

Unbackable at 1/14 to win the fight, a more betting proposition is which round Tyson will win in, with round's 2 or 3 favourite at 4/1. In our 'Total Rounds' betting under 4.5 rounds is favourite at 8/13.

Once the action gets under way we will have three in-running markets on offer including: Fight Winner; Fight Outcome (KO, Decision etc); and Round Betting.

NASCAR Nextel Cup Series - Pennsylvania 500
Su Aug 1 - 1:00 pm EST

This is the second annual Nextel Cup race at Pocono Raceway, the first was won by Jimmie Johnson back in June, and the result is often a good indicator to next week's Indy Brickyard 400 race.

The two tracks long straights and tight turns are unique, and not surprisingly the winners have been similar in most instances, with success at Pocono the key to success at Indy. Consequently, success in the first Pocono race often heralds success this week, which means that Johnson must have a great chance of completing the sweep. He has not won in five races since, but still has the series points lead along with three wins for the season, and in each of his first two full seasons he has swept a season of races at two separate tracks - Dover on 02, and New Hampshire last year.

Looking back to that race in June, Jeremy Mayfield was setting Jimmie Johnson up for the perfect winning pass, just like he did to the late great Dale Earnhardt in 2000, only for the caution flag to come out with three laps remaining. History tells us that the race ended under caution with Johnson winning, but you would have to believe that Mayfield could have won the race. He did finish second, and the team must feel they can win this week based on how well the car has been performing.

Nigel's checkered flag... Jeremy Mayfield Each Way @ 20/1!

bet365 Pennsylvania 500 prices... Jimmie Johnson 4/1, Jeff Gordon 13/2, Ryan Newman 8/1, Kurt Busch, Matt Kenseth, Tony Stewart 10/1, Jeremy Mayfield 20/1, others on bet365 website. Each Way 1/5 1.2.3.
